BREAKING: Senate President Hun Sen Questions Thailand’s Refusal to Return 18 Captured Cambodian Soldiers
Phnom Penh, August 4, 2025 — Former Prime Minister and current Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen posted on his social media today, providing an update on the ongoing border tensions with Thailand.
According to Senate President Hun Sen, after a break of more than two hours, Cambodian authorities resumed their work with a review of the frontline situation. He emphasized the government’s commitment to strictly implementing the ceasefire and strengthening defenses against any violations. He also noted that he had discussed with the Prime Minister and called on the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to intervene in the case of 18 Cambodian soldiers who were captured by Thai troops in a Cambodian military barracks shortly after the ceasefire agreement came into effect.
Senate President highlighted that the soldiers were detained approximately eight hours after the ceasefire was supposed to be in place, which constitutes a clear violation of the agreement, which prohibits firing, troop movements, and troop reinforcements.
He expressed concern over Thailand’s refusal to return the soldiers to Cambodia and posed the question: Why does Thailand refuse to return the 18 Cambodian soldiers?
The statement underscores the ongoing escalation and the Cambodian government’s call for accountability and adherence to international agreements.
